One of the main attractions of the coast of Sao Paulo, this island offers its visitors a spectacular display of nature. The island remained abandoned until March 29, 1977, when the “Parque Estadual da Ilha Anchieta (Anchieta Island State Park) swas created. The park occupies the whole island and, in addition to protecting natural resources, preserves the rich cultural heritage represented by the ruins of the prison built by colonists in 1904 and destroyed in 1955 in response to various rebellions by the indigenous people who had been imprisoned. The island is characterized by a thick vegetation of Atlantic Forest, paradisiacal beaches and crystal clear calm water.
